Government owned assets, whether stockpiled in military depots or in use around the world, must be labeled and reported to the IUID Registry. This logistical challenge cuts across numerous functions within the military hierarchy. The streamlining of legacy property is a high priority with Congress and the GSA.
Whether government furnished (GFP) or legacy property, the requirement to initially submit all property to the DoD will most likely start with the transmission of a virtual UID. Eventually this must be converted to a machine- readable 2D Data Matrix bar code that meets MIL-STD-130 requirements. Finally, all that property and equipment will need to be linked together in a parent-child relationship with additional custody reference data.
UID marking and data management is taking place at military installations around the world and at depots across the US. At those sites maintenance facilities are a typical point of UID activity. In some depots central UID labs have been created to handle marking and processing. UID Comply!® data management software from A2B Tracking is the UID "engine" in several locations including NAVSEA Crane Division and an another unnamed Army Depot.
