IUID is an integral part of MIL STD 130 as set forth by the US Department of Defense. MIL STD 130 requires every item in the possession of the US Military to be marked with an IUID also known as Item Unique Identification.

Each IUID is a unique identifier containing specific data pertinent to an individual asset and is identified with a 2D Data Matrix barcode. This unique barcode is used by the DoD to track and report information about that item throughout the lifecycle of that asset.

MIL STD 130 requires that the IUID label be physically attached to the asset for the full lifetime of that asset. Once the IUID label has been applied and registered — it is a painful process to change or fix any mistakes. Therefore, it is critical to get the IUID data correct the first time and applied properly to the item in order to maintain compliance.

Audit Readiness

The US Congress has mandated and the DoD is committed to Audit Readiness in 2018. Which means that all mission critical assets in the possession of the US Military must be accountable and ready for audits by the DCMA. Auditors will be looking to ensure that all items that have been reported to the system of record actually exist. And that all items that exist have been properly reported to that same system of record.

The IUID Policy is at the core of this Audit Readiness Initiative. And it seems clear that DCMA will focus on IUID and MIL STD 130 compliance for all branches of the military and the defense contractors who support them.
