I read the October 20th issue of the AIM Connections Newsletter, titled “The Mobile Workforce: Is There an App for That?” with great interest. Editor Bert Moore gave us his perspective on smart phone devices, the mobile workforce and Auto ID. I agree with Bert’s prediction that smart phone devices will play an increasingly important role as data capture devices. We know that convenience is a huge motivator for relying upon these devices. The fact is that we have all but replaced our reliance on desktop and laptop computers for email or “unstructured” data entry.

In my view, the only barrier to wholesale adoption of smart phone devices for data capture is lack of a data collection app that will work across an enterprise. Aside from that, connectivity (by way of 3G and 4G networks) is there and, for the most part, screen real estate is too. See Bert’s article below:
